Main

The Main River travels across Central Germany, merging with the Red Main and White Main before joining the Rhine River near Mainz. There is also a canal between the Main and the Danube that connects the two rivers. With 16 locks, it stretches 106 miles between Bamberg and Regensburg. As a result, navigation between the North Sea and the Black Sea can be carried out entirely by a river.

Mainz dates back to Roman times and highlights include the Gutenberg Museum and the Dom St Martin Cathedral. One of Europe's most impressive buildings, the majestic Residential Palace, can be found in the town of Wurzburg in North Bavaria. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bamberg oozes with medieval history. An example of Gothic and Romanesque architecture can be seen throughout the perfectly preserved town centre.
