Originating at the foot of the Andes mountain in Peru, the mighty Amazon spans nine counties and covers 40% of South America on a 4,000 mile journey to the Atlantic Sea. It is also very wide - during the dry season the average is 2 - 6 miles across, but the rainy season can see it hitting up to 30 miles in place.
